Monster Mash Continued

Happy Halloween!  As promised, here are some pics of some monsters I painted over the summer while up in NYC.

First up in the Cockatrice.  This was a fun model to paint.  Something different and the reason why the left wing droops is that I left this model at Newark Airport on a 105 degree weekend in the sun.  I was late for my plane and forgot to cover him.  So anyone who says Finecast warps is right, but the temp in my truck was probably 120 degrees all during a 3 day weekend.  According to all those whiners, this should have been a puddle.

 Next I always wanted to paint up a giant.  I painted him so I can use him for both my Chaos Army and my Ogre Kingdoms Army.

 Then I painted up the Lord on Manticore.  Anyone who has assembled this will understand how GW did a fantastic job designing the head of this piece. I think there were 3 or 4 layers just to the mane.  The model is pretty worthless in game, but my goal to have all the non-SC units in the book is almost complete.  I think all I lack are Chaos Trolls, a Chaos Dragon, and the new releases.

 My friend Rufus bought me the Avatars of War Chaos Lord while he was out and about down in SC a few months ago.  Last week I finally painted him up while painting the Soul Grinder.  I didn't like the sword or shield so I converted the sword with a Mace from a Chaos Knight and the shield from the Manticore kit above.  I have been using him as my Level 4 Death Sorcerer.  My WoC Army has always been my Word Bearers of Fantasy, so it is only fitting I have a Dark Apostle to lead them.  Looking at these pics I think I might do another highlight on white to bring out the bone a bit more.

Monster Mash

I have been working on my Soul Grinder for the painting competition over at Bull City Wargaming.  So here it is.

The colors I use are the following:
Blue - Enchanted, Teclis, Ice, Etherium (Drybrush), and then Guilliman (Glaze)
Grey - Mechanicus Standard, Black Wash, Stormvermin Fur, Dawnstone. Fortress, and Longbeard (Drybrush)
Yellow - Iyanden, Yriel, Sunburst, Bleached Bone

The photos flashed out the grey a bit.  I think it looks more blended under normal lighting. Only conversions are the tongue and shield in the front.  The tongue is from the spawn kit, which I stole the idea from the WD article a month or so ago.  I kept the torso and abdomen the same grey as I wanted to keep the colors simple.  I am still only using those three colors for my entire Daemon Army.  I feel Daemons don't use metal, they use what they interpret metal to be from our own minds.  Daemons are our fears come real, and in my opinion they follow different laws of physics than our own material plane.

I am really enjoying the new drybrush paints and glazes, and I think my painting has improved overnight.  Enjoy!  I have a whole slew of monster pictures that I painted over the summer which I will post in a few days.

Today I saw a picture of the new WOC warshrine. I must say I am glad GW was inspired by yours truly.  FYI I made my warshrine before the 7th ed book was even released back when it was just rumored to be in the army book.

And here is one of the standard Daemonettes in the unit. I really need to set aside some time to paint. I have been staring at these guys for months. Then there are some chariots to paint along with a Soulgrinder.

The Nighmare Awakens

Some of you know that I have been working on a new army for the last couple of months. Now after getting everything assembled, I started painting last week on my mono-Slaanesh list.  I had been trying out several paint themes, but none on them tickled my fancy.  I wanted them to be dark and scary, not bright and pastel.  I wanted something different than pink and purple.  I imagine a Daemon army materializing out of the Etherium or your closet in the night, so I did not want to use metalics in my army (unless Khorne, but I won't have Khorne in a Slaanesh army).  The theme also had to be within my painting ability. 

Since DC Comics rebooted all their comics a few months ago, I have been reading all the Batman comics, and it struck me.  That is the image I wanted.  So I was inspired to theme my army around the older Batman colors!  Dark grey, blue, and yellow.  EUREKA!

So without further adieu, here is the Alluress for my first unit:  

So far I have only painted about 10 models and a BSB.  I am not too happy with the banner of my BSB since I am not very good at freehand, but I will try and get some photos of this unit up in the next few days.

Boom Boom Boom

Well, I'm back. Here are some pics of my Ogre Army I used back at Brawler Bash V. I went 3-2 with this army and lost Game 5 on Table 3 to Ben and his Beastman Army (Ben won the GT btw). BBV was too long ago, and my memory sucks from too many concussions, so I will not bore you with details.  Most of this army was made from my 7th ed list, with a few added command groups, Firebelly, Ironblaster, and Thundertusk.  (No mournfangs)

Here is my Firebelly, I used the plastic Balrog's sword instead of the FB hammer, and the hilt is made from a spare Gutplate.  I do not have a painted photo, but I am quite pleased with how he turned out.  One of the best models imho that GW has made, even though the head doesn't fit that well.

My Ogres are pretty much done for now.  I am currently working on a mono-Slaanesh list (with lots of new toys for them this week).  With WoC coming out this Fall, I do not think the Ogres will get much playtime.  This army is the best painted army I own., and I am quite proud of it.  One day I may go back and do a final highlight on the skin tone, but we shall see.

Well, that is all, I am stuck up in NYC working a lot of hours, so painting time has been limited, but here is a view from my "office/trailer" window.  And yes, I can look up her robes :)  The Park Police got quite a kick for the first week I was there at the security checkpoints getting onto Ellis Island.  Every day they went through my work truck trying to figure out what all these half naked and clawed models were in a case that looked like a "gun case".  Sometimes it is hard to explain the hobby.  Now I just leave all my hobby supplies at the place I am staying.

The Ogre Kingdoms are back! It is time to start organizing my army that has been collecting dust (quite literally) on the shelf these last few years. I am waiting patiently for my army book and a few reinforcements to arrive later this week.




Here is my army that I haven't used since I dropped them at Brawler Bash II a few years ago. After every metal model exploded into many pieces, they are finally ready to see some action again. With the new list I plan on adding a Thundertusk. I think it will provide a nice centerpiece for the army and help support all my Ironguts. I also need to paint up a few command models to match as my list was made for 7th and MSU tactics. I am trying to use as many as of my older models as possible since I never have time to paint.

My list I have painted is:

Tyrant, I might drop him down to a Bruiser. I ordered the new Golgfag model to act as a Tyrant. Looking at Armor of Silvered Steel (2+ AS), AHW, and Talisman of Protection (4++) or I might just go offensive. Nit sure yet and I need to see the book.
2 Butchers (Gut Maw and Heavens) I am really liking Lore of Heavens lately. All those re-rolls have been helping my WoC, and might help out the poor WS of the Ogres.
I have 4 butcher models altogether but I find that too many wizards means not enough PD to go around.

Bruiser, BSB possibly Draginhide Banner or just make him tough to kill with the 2+ armor.

2 Units of 9 Ironguts w/FC (need to paint command) One with +1 Ld banner or the Strider one.
1 Unit of 9 Bulls w/FC (need to paint champion)
1 unit of 30 Gnoblar Hunters

2x3 Leadbelchers or maybe 1x6. Not sure yet. I would like 2x4 units, and I might just paint up 2 quick unit fillers of stacked powderkegs or something similar.

2 Gorgers, these might be left out as they are now too expensive

1x2 ManEaters with Scout and Swiftstride. I might model a few "commando" looking ME's using a bunch of WE leaves and "Conan the Barbarian" camo paint design.

1 Thundertusk. Waiting to paint up this beast when it arrives.
