They are never too young to start

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  If you read my last post you know ours was quite busy.  I was in a reflective sort of mood and thought about how wonderful it is to see my two year old daughter starting to enjoy certain crafts.  The reason I have been posting more these last few weeks is very simple.  I have hobby things to show to you people.  Anyone with young children understands that one of the hardest things to do is balance life and young children with our Warhammer hobby.  I think I came up with a solution.

My daughter has been painting with me. We put a small apron on her, set up her painting station (really just a an old end table with a towel over it) and head into the basement.  I grab a few old figures from my bitz box and let her go to town with her pinks and glittering greens.  This entertains her for an hour or two.  Daughter is happy, Daddy is happy, and most importantly, Mama is happy we aren't bothering her for a little while.

Here are a sample of her awesome paint jobs.  I must say I am very proud, they still look better than my early days of painting.  The one thing I find amusing is she is very concerned with painting the underside of the base.

I have also been working on my gaming table.  I always wanted a table that I can insert different boards, and this table will allow me to drop in different "worlds" if I want to in the future.  Plus I like having a lip on the edge of the table to keep things from falling off.  Here are a couple photos.  Right now I just threw some terrain down.  I still need to flock sections of the board, but you get the basic idea.  I wanted an 8'x4' table, but that would probably be too big.  I also plan on finishing that section of the basement as well and put some shelving under the table to store terrain.

The next Everchosen of Chaos

I have a whole bunch of pictures to publish of my Daemons and my new Gaming table, but they will have to wait a bit for the coming of the next Everchosen has arrived this Thanksgiving morning. I predict he will be the next Bobby Fisher of Warhammer!

Finally!

I finished up my first unit of 30 Daemonettes this last week.  I started the first 10 basic troops back in the summer, but I could not motivate myself to finish them.  I found some shortcuts with my painting technique for the Core troops of the army.  Basically, I prime grey, then give a black wash.  Instead of starting with a dark grey and working up like I did on the Soul Grinder.  So I painted 17 of them in a assembly line and went back and lightened the skin tone of the ones I had already completed.

My BSB, the only thing in the army that will have a different color than 3 used on everything else.  I still cannot decide what to put on it.  Right now I am thinking about some stitching and some faces peering out.  I am terrible at freehand, so any ideas are welcome.

 Here are some basic troopers so you can see what I have been doing.  Some of the heads come from the Seekers kit.

Something Fun

Here is something that I have had in my collection for a long time.  It is an Armorcast terrain piece that I think is now OOP.  It took longer for the wash to dry, than to actually paint it.

Monster Mash Continued

Happy Halloween!  As promised, here are some pics of some monsters I painted over the summer while up in NYC.

First up in the Cockatrice.  This was a fun model to paint.  Something different and the reason why the left wing droops is that I left this model at Newark Airport on a 105 degree weekend in the sun.  I was late for my plane and forgot to cover him.  So anyone who says Finecast warps is right, but the temp in my truck was probably 120 degrees all during a 3 day weekend.  According to all those whiners, this should have been a puddle.

 Next I always wanted to paint up a giant.  I painted him so I can use him for both my Chaos Army and my Ogre Kingdoms Army.

 Then I painted up the Lord on Manticore.  Anyone who has assembled this will understand how GW did a fantastic job designing the head of this piece. I think there were 3 or 4 layers just to the mane.  The model is pretty worthless in game, but my goal to have all the non-SC units in the book is almost complete.  I think all I lack are Chaos Trolls, a Chaos Dragon, and the new releases.

 My friend Rufus bought me the Avatars of War Chaos Lord while he was out and about down in SC a few months ago.  Last week I finally painted him up while painting the Soul Grinder.  I didn't like the sword or shield so I converted the sword with a Mace from a Chaos Knight and the shield from the Manticore kit above.  I have been using him as my Level 4 Death Sorcerer.  My WoC Army has always been my Word Bearers of Fantasy, so it is only fitting I have a Dark Apostle to lead them.  Looking at these pics I think I might do another highlight on white to bring out the bone a bit more.

Monster Mash

I have been working on my Soul Grinder for the painting competition over at Bull City Wargaming.  So here it is.

The colors I use are the following:
Blue - Enchanted, Teclis, Ice, Etherium (Drybrush), and then Guilliman (Glaze)
Grey - Mechanicus Standard, Black Wash, Stormvermin Fur, Dawnstone. Fortress, and Longbeard (Drybrush)
Yellow - Iyanden, Yriel, Sunburst, Bleached Bone

The photos flashed out the grey a bit.  I think it looks more blended under normal lighting. Only conversions are the tongue and shield in the front.  The tongue is from the spawn kit, which I stole the idea from the WD article a month or so ago.  I kept the torso and abdomen the same grey as I wanted to keep the colors simple.  I am still only using those three colors for my entire Daemon Army.  I feel Daemons don't use metal, they use what they interpret metal to be from our own minds.  Daemons are our fears come real, and in my opinion they follow different laws of physics than our own material plane.

I am really enjoying the new drybrush paints and glazes, and I think my painting has improved overnight.  Enjoy!  I have a whole slew of monster pictures that I painted over the summer which I will post in a few days.

Today I saw a picture of the new WOC warshrine. I must say I am glad GW was inspired by yours truly.  FYI I made my warshrine before the 7th ed book was even released back when it was just rumored to be in the army book.
